The 2008 Chicago Air and Water Show celebrates 50 years with three days of daredevil thrills in the air and on the water at North Avenue Beach and along Chicago’s magnificent lakefront August 15th to 17th. The 50th Annual Chicago Air & Water Show presented by Shell Oil Products U.S. and the City of Chicago promises to be like no other. For the first time there will be a Friday night show and evening concert at North Avenue Beach. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team will headline. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels will kick-off the festivities at 3PM on Friday, August 15th, which a free concert immediately following at the North Avenue Beach Boat House. The night show will conclude at 9PM with a spectacular fireworks display. On Saturday, August 16th and Sunday, August 17th, the water show begins at 9AM and the air show runs from 11AM to 4PM both days. Summertime is the ideal time to discover the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park at Governors State University. The park includes twenty-six sculptures by nationally and internationally acclaimed artists including significant works by Mark diSuvero, Mary Miss, Bruce Nauman, Martin Puryear, and Richard Hunt located along pathways on the university grounds. A free guided tour of the south section of the park will take place on Sunday, August 17th at 2PM. Visitors are asked to gather on the patio off the Hall of Governors. Comfortable footwear is recommended for the 1.5 mile walking tour, which occasionally includes uneven paths. Elgin Community College’s child care center will begin offering evening child care and a homework club starting Monday, August 18th. The new services allow ECC students to have a safe, convenient and dependable child care option while attending evening classes. The service also is open to ECC employees. Registration is underway to enroll in the new services, which will be held from 5 to 9PM, Monday through Thursday. Evening child care will be open to children ages 3 to 6, and activities will involve arts, crafts, stories and songs. A light snack also will be provided at the child care center, located in Room 150 in the college’s Health and Business Technology Center on the Main Campus, at 1700 Spartan Drive in Elgin. The homework club will be open to children ages 6 to 12. The center will provide a quiet, structured environment for those children to do their homework. Upon registration, parents have the option of dropping their child into the center at any time or scheduling a regular time to drop off or pick up their child. This option provides students the convenience of using the college’s evening program when they need it most. The cost of the services is $4.50 per hour, per child. In addition to the hourly fee, there is either a $50 registration fee for drop-in service or $20 registration fee for scheduled care. The service ends Thursday, December 11th. The child care center also offers daytime child care for infants 6 weeks to 2 years old and for children ages 2 to 5. Last school year, 27 Chicago public school students died violently. A group of school bus drivers from the south side are fed up with violence affecting the kids that ride their buses, so they’re leading a walk in the south suburbs of Chicago. The organizers of the walk call themselves “D.A.P.S.S.A.V.”, or Drivers, Attendants, Parents, Students and Schools Against Violence. Join them on September 6th as they walk to stomp out violence in our communities. The 3-mile “Stop the Violence” Walk will begin at Dwight D.
